Random Stuff

For once, I'm at a bit of a loss for what to say. Now that I've had my consult, there's not much going on. Just waiting to feel ready to get back on the horse. I've started crocheting and I'm really enjoying it. I'm hoping to crochet a baby blanket for my cousin. She's have a girl (tear) and is due at the end of March. It hurt a lot when I found out she was pregnant over the summer because I was on a forced TTC break while M was in California for three months. Felt like the longest three months of my life. I can't be too begrudging to my cousin, though. She ended up needing clomid in order to get pregnant and she has been very sweet asking about my TTC woes.

In other news I freaked the shit out of myself today by reading comments about the sonohysterogram procedure (or whatever its called). I'm convinced it is going to be the most painful experience of my life and I will get a life threatening infection in my uterus from it. That's what I get for reading things on the internet ::shakes head::. I've got a while to prepare myself and I can ask my parents if I can take vicodin for the pain. The useful, less hysterical, information I gleaned from personal reports about the procedure is: it can hurt more for women who have never given birth (check), and it can hurt worse for women who have a retroverted uterus (check, again). This does not help me feel better about it, but at least I am aware.

This entry is more word-vomit than usual. I've got a lot batting around my head and yet, not at the same time. Thank goodness my sister and I are going for a walk this evening. We always have a little therapy session while we exercise, LOL.

  1. Don't panic too much. Really I thought the SHG was nothing. Really once they get the catheter in it's a breeze. The HSG test was much worse. Don't worry you'll do great!

  2. are you having the SHG or the HSG? Anyway, I had my HSG and it wasn't painful except for when they put the catheter in it felt like someone pinched my internal organ because it had a cute face (I mean they did pinch an internal organ, oops). But afterwards I just had period-like cramps. I took two ibuprofen a couple hours before and then another 2 a couple hours after and it was fine for me. But I think if you have stronger pain killers on hand just in case, that is a good plan too. I hear it's more painful if your tubes are blocked. That is, if you're having the HSG. I actually don't know about the SHG...

    1. I'm really sucking at the procedural lingo right now. I *think* what I'm getting is an SHG. Whatever its called, its the one with water not dye. Thanks for the advice :-)

    2. Yep, SHG is the one with water (saline) only. Here's my experience: my HSG (with the dye) was pretty awful a year ago. I had taken Vicodin beforehand and after and the pain was still extreme for me. I have a retroverted uterus, too. BUT, as you can see from Robin's comment, people's experiences are very different with the pain.

Then, I had an SHG a couple of months ago and it was a piece of cake. I took a Vicodin beforehand and the pain was very minor. Maybe my tubes had been blocked before the HSG and the force of the dye fluid cleared them, making it more painful? I don't know. Actually, just remembered that my doc said she doesn't have to use the cervix clamp (the dreaded tenaculum) with an SHG, which really helped minimize the pain.

    3. Thank you for clarifying! I have heard that an HSG is more painful than SHG, but then it looks like there is a big variance in peoples' experiences. I think I'll play it safe, take vicodin, and hope for the best. I feel better knowing a cervix clamp shouldn't be necessary!

  3. Let me just say I'm a B-A-B-Y when it comes to pain, so I get sorts of worked up prior to any testing. I literally sobbed in the techs arms prior to my HSG. Yes, I was that freaked out. In the end, is wasn't as bad as I'd made it out to be. So when I went in for my SHG just 2 weeks ago, I was able to keep my composure a bit better. I don't have a tilted ute, but honestly- the test was a breeze. I chatted and laughed with the Doc the entire time. Now, the biopsy was a different story- but since you aren't having one of those at the same time, I'll spare you the details. I did take a vicodin and 30mg of Midol prior to the SHG specifically for the biopsy pain. It can't hurt to take some though, just make sure you have someone to drive you home afterwards :)

    1. What, you don't want me driving while hopped up on vicodin? ::pantomimes steering wildly:: ;-) Thank you for the advice - all the comments here are really helping me climb off the ceiling about the SHG, LOL.

  4. I've only had the HSG, but mine was ok. I took ibuprofen beforehand and it didn't really bother me at all. I might have been cramping a little later in the afternoon, but I barely noticed. I haven't had an SHG, but a friend just did, and she said hers was much easier than she expected. Even if it is a little painful, it will be over pretty quickly if it's anything like the HSG. Mine lasted a grand total of 10 minutes, and that was only because my body confused the hell out of the radiologist. Good luck!
